Brief Introduction: Lanzhou xiguan grand mosque is located at the west end of xiguan street (west end of Linxia road, five roads junction) of Lanzhou city. It was built in the Hongwu or Yongle years of the Ming dynasty  (around 15 century) by Muslim merchants,known as "guest mosque". It was rebuilt in 1684 and enlarged in 18th centruy and 20th century. It was once listed as the provincial key cultural relics protection unit. But it was totally destroyed in 1960s . In 1980s the local government spent two years to rebuilt the mosque. So far the mosque covers an area of morethan 4,800 square meters .

The worship hallis 3,000 square meters in area, and the total height is about 37 meters. There are totally four floors of worship hall, among which the ground floor is 3.9 meters high. The offices, lecture hall,dormitory, storage, bath room and a small worship hall only for women are equipped on the ground floor. The upper three floors are mainly  worship halls, which can accommodate more than 3,000 people. There are also a hidden scripture room, a broadcasting room and a rest room in the horse running corridor.

The main hall is circular in plane. After you step into the main hall from outside you will find the orientation inside the main hall deflects a little angle with outer axis, which makes the hall is opposite "kaaba" direction, (Mecca is situated at 16 degrees 25 points southwest of Lanzhou). Through the turning point, the worshippers will feel in "another world" , whose thoughts completely are transferred into worshipping atmosphere and who seem to immerse in a self-cleaning, solemn and respectful atmosphere to worship . The large section of the second floor and the horse-running corridor are connecting spaces, and the third and fourth are connecting spaces as well. The four floors can also be connected vertically. Each space has a "mihalabu" sign facing it. Outside of the fourth floor,there is a cloistered platform, on which tourists can walk to enjoy the whole view of Lanzhou city.

The construction of the whole mosque is exquisite in design and particular in shape, which is also unique in the domestic mosque architecture. In 1992, it was rated as one of the top ten outstanding buildings in Lanzhou.
