Brief Introduction: The Yellow River Mother Statue is located at the north side of Xiaoxu Park and in the middle section of Binhe Road on the south bank of Yellow River in Lanzhou. It is the most beautiful sculpture of the mother river of the Chinese nation -- the Yellow River(Huanghe). With high artistic value, it has won the award of excellence in the first national urban sculpture program evaluation. The sculpture was created by Ms. He E, a famous sculptor in Gansu province and was made in 1986 by the Beijing Sculpture Factory. It is 6 meters long, 2.2 meters wide and 2.6 meters high and weighs more than 40 tons. It is composed of a "mother" and a"baby boy"，which respectively symbolizes the mother of the Yellow River who nurtured the Chinese nation, and the Chinese descendants who grew up happily and healthily. The sculpture is simple in composition and profound in meaning,reflecting the long history and culture of Gansu province.

The mother(symbolizing the yellow river),with fluttering hair ,kind manner and slight smile, was tall and well-proportioned, which is lying on her back above the waves and bending the right arm slightly. On the right side of the mother, a naked baby boy , who is slightly looking to the left with innocent and naughty smile and looks so playful and lovely, is snuggling up to the mother , symbolizing the mother of the Yellow River to protect the Chinese people. Water ripples and fish patterns are engraved on the base of the sculpture, which are derived from the original patterns of ancient colored pottery in Gansu Province. Meanwhile, water ripples and fish patterns also reflect the keen observation of the ancient people of the Yellow River Basin on natural phenomena, and show the inherent strength of the Chinese people.

The sculpture is made of granite. But why do not use better marble or some other material for the sculpture instead of plaingranite? Granite is chosen because it can better show the color of the Yellow River, and show the color of our Chinese people. At the same time, the rough texture of granite seems to tell the vicissitudes of life and changes experienced by the Chinese nation for thousands of years.
