Brief Introduction: The overhanging Great Wall is about 11 kilometers away from Jiayuguan City and 7 kilometers away from Jiayuguan pass. Because it is built on the ridge of about 45 degrees, it looks like hanging upside down in the sky, so it gets the name of "OverhangingGreat Wall". The overhanging Great Wall is the northward extension of Jiayuguan Pass, which was built in 1539. It is an important part of the ancient military defense system of Jiayuguan Pass. The Great Wall was rammed with gravel and loess obtained from local material. Now only 750 meters of wall was left,which was restored in 1987 and consisted of the path, buttress wall and beacon towers.

To make it easier for visitors to climb, a walkway with brick steps was built in 1987 between the first watch tower and the ridge wall. Along the wall there are only four hundred steps, but it is enough to make people hesitate to climb. However, as long as you reach to the top of the mountain and take a broad view, the desolation of the desert outside the Passwas in full view. And a few oases that dot the landscape shows that life is still struggling against the elements.

As visitors ascend the steps, it is likewalking on flat ground at the smooth part and like climbing a cliff at the steep part. It resembles the Great Wall at Badaling in Beijing,so it is reputated as the western Badaling great wall in China.

Travel Tips: 1, The people who has heart disease, high blood pressure or other urgent diseases are not recommended to climb up the wall;

2, As you are climbing,just for safety,please follow the principle which is “ as walking ,no photo and as photographing ,no walk".

3, If the wind is very strong ,do not recommend to climb up the great wall.
