As the name implies, Jiu means liquor in Chinese, and Quan means spring. About the name here is an interesting historical story.Legend has it that during the second year of Emperor Wudi of the Han Dynasty (121 B.C.),General Huo Qubing conquered the Xiongnu in the west and won a complete victory here. Emperor Wudi of the Han Dynasty granted an altar of imperial liquor. The general Huo Qubing thought the victory was not only from him his but also from the soldiers. He would like to offer imperial liquor to every soldiers. But the limited liquor was not quite enough for so many soldiers. Just when he was thinking about it, he was passing by a spring. So an idea came to his mind. He ordered the soldiers to pour all of liquor into the spring and shared it with his soldiers.Hence the spring was named "Jiuquan" . Now the spring is still in the park .
